Near to Faro and Olhao are large salt marsh lagoons and sandy islands that are ideal centres for walking and paradise for bird watching. There are 236 recorded species of resident and migratory birds in the Algarve. Around our base-camp there is a great deal of bird life. A pair of Golden Oricles nest near by, and in early spring, nightingales nest and sing in the valley below. Hoopoe with its zebra-striped wings and ostentatious crest strut locally as do small storks and heron. Last year we saw a Spanish Imperial Eagle while walking near Barranco Velho and a pair of Short Toed Eagles circled the village for two days in June, a wonderful sight.
The Ria Formosia reserve saltpans and marshes have a good variety of bird life. The walks at Quinta do Marim, a reserve and sanctuary, has bird watching hides where you can spot herons, grebes, coot, moorhens, teal, sandpipers, mallards and even purple gallinule. There is also a Portuguese water dog, hospital kennel and a restored tide mill that is still used to mill flour. It is one of only three in the country.
