About the Algarve - The Landscape

Prev Next
Further back from the coast is an area of cultivation and the foothills of the Serras a barrocal region, made up of Jurassic limestone, dolomites and marl.
The central barrocal region is an area of rolling hills and heathlands. The fertile soil produces orchards of orange, lemon, fig and almond; olive trees are dotted about everywhere. This farming region also supports small family run vineyards. As the world's largest supplier of cork, oak cork trees are abundant.
There is a wealth of wild flowers and flowering bushes. April until June is prettiest, when the narcissus, paeonia, wild jasmine and the white small-flowered cistus bloom. In summer more cultivated flowers are on display and the blooms and specimens are usually bigger than anything you see in the England or northern Europe.
